Fif­teen peo­ple es­caped with­out in­jury yes­ter­day, af­ter a fire broke out on the com­pound of an as­phalt plant op­er­at­ed by JUSAM­CO Pavers in Clax­ton Bay.

Guardian Me­dia was in­formed that around 11.30 am, mem­bers of a main­te­nance crew were con­duct­ing works on the com­pound when they were alert­ed to a fire at the site.

Fire­fight­ers re­spond­ed and with an aug­ment­ed wa­ter sup­ply from the com­pa­ny, man­aged to douse the blaze at the es­tab­lish­ment, which is a sub­sidiary of Ju­nior Sam­my Con­trac­tors. Sand was al­so used to pre­vent the fire from spread­ing.

Speak­ing about the in­ci­dent af­ter­wards, ex­ec­u­tive chair­man of the com­pa­ny, Ju­nior Sam­my, said the dam­age caused by the fire will im­pact road paving works.

“This is a plant that sup­plies south, the whole of south. It will slow us down a lit­tle,” Sam­my said.

How­ev­er, Sam­my was un­able to es­ti­mate the loss­es in­curred as a re­sult of the fire.

As­sis­tant Chief Fire Of­fi­cer for the South­ern Di­vi­sion, Ansar Ali, said an in­ves­ti­ga­tion will be launched to de­ter­mine the cause of the blaze.
